@ohhthatsrich: Employees of #spacex want to establish a new town in #Texas and elect a security manager as mayor. Hmm, I feel like I read about this in the #History #books Working and living in a town managed by your employer? What could ever go wrong? #union #companytown
Anyone remember that old coal mining song- you load 16 tons and what do you get another day older and deeper in debt- saying Peter don’t you call me cus I can’t go- I owe my soul to the company store

Here's the thing. It's a bad idea, but I'm down to let him try it here in our modern times. Having video proof of how wrong it can go is important and rare.

At company towns you had to buy from the company store all your food and goods at whatever price the company determined

In my hometown in South Carolina, we're surrounded by "mill villages." that used to be a company town owned by the mills. The stories some of the older folks would tell we're horrific.

Because of environmental regulations Musk hasn’t been able to do some things he’d like to. Having his own city helps negate some of this. He wants his own school as well.

Companies charged rent for the housing, of course, which was substandard, the towns were heavily polluted, and the workers didn't earn enough to pay what the "owed" the company, so we're kept in

my great-grandpa came from Italy at age 5. His dad worked worked in the iron mine in Nagaunee, MI. They lived in a company house, and when the husband died, you lost housing.

I heard of a similar thing where the workers were paid in "company dollars". so they could buy things in town from company-owned stores (at inflated rates), but their money was worthless elsewhere

I grew up in a company 'town'. Village really. but the people was European so actually was quite good. I had a rather idyllic childhood, in the community aspect. no religious dictates. lots of sports
