I don’t get the idea of Eggers films being emotionless, The Witch and Nosferatu were emotional powerhouses for me.

I think he is closer to Fincher than Anderson

People can criticize Eggers for having one dimensional characters but the focus of his movies is in the title and everything else is secondary

His dialogue is really bad. Treated like more set dressing.

I think there are similarities in the cinematography but the parallels and there. Eggers has a ton of emotional depth. Especially in something like The Witch.

Now that he’s working with bigger budgets I unfortunately agree. I think his writing is just thin enough that with a scrappy budget it works, but when you give him endless tools it’s hollow.

Eggers can manage to shoot things not directly in the center of the frame

Any time I watch a movie from either, I come away with "Okay, that happened" and nothing else. Just a bunch of stuff happening that's visually interesting but not exhilarating.

Eggers has too much life in his films for that one to one comparison. A way better comparison would be Yorgos Lanthimos

his stuff has very emotional and varied performances- unlike some of wes' recent work which falls into the camp you described imo (especially asteroid city)

respectfully I wish you guys had a woman on for this Nosferatu discussion. it's a movie about female sexuality & i think that perspective is very noticably absent in this convo

I hope those aren’t real criticisms of Wes Anderson or Eggers, that would be so dumb

nothing about Nosfuratu “grabs you by the throat” and keeps you locked in. the image of count Orlok grabbing Ellen by the throat in the trailer doesn’t count.

eggers films are incredibly symbolic and psychological. these are fairy tales and fables ripe with meaning wrapped in a historical accurate aesthetic. he's a very jungian director
