Diabetes supplement breakdown: Berberine⁣ ⁣ It has been getting all of the hype lately….⁣ ⁣ And I’ve had many people asking me to do a post about it as a registered dietitian, certified diabetes educator, and someone who lives with diabetes, so let’s dive in:⁣ ⁣ Berberine is a compound found in the bark and leaves in certain species of plants.⁣ ⁣ It’s been in use medicinally for thousands of years, and it’s been shown to support glucose uptake into cells more efficiently, so it can help boost insulin sensitivity. ⁣ ⁣ Some people will even go so far as to say that it can mimic the effects of ozempic, which may be a little bit far, but to each their own.⁣ ⁣ However, in a study where people took berberine, they were able to decrease their A1c by 0.8%, which is a pretty significant amount.⁣ ⁣ That can be the difference of having somebody with an A1c well into the mid 7s and now suddenly you’re under 7 (the clinical threshold).⁣ ⁣ Then there was a meta analysis (that combined a bunch of different studies) that showed significant decreases in A1c, fasting blood sugar, and insulin resistance score for people living with diabetes.⁣ ⁣ Keep in mind, if you live with type 2, it may be way more effective than if you live with type 1, but it’s definitely something worth considering adding to your arsenal of supplements.⁣ ⁣ A typical dose for the day tends to be 1000-1500mg, usually split throughout the day.⁣ ⁣ Before you start anything like this, ask your care team and make sure it’s going to fit into your life and your medication matrix (this is a BIG deal since the insulin sensitivity benefits are potentially massive)⁣ ⁣ Let me know what supplement you want to see next and if you’ve had success with berberine.⁣ ⁣ #berberine #type1diabetes #type2diabetes #supplements #supplement
