@pbsnews: New mothers face barriers getting the mental health care so many need Maternal mortality rates have soared in the U.S. to nearly three times those of other high-income countries. Over 20 percent of deaths among new mothers are from suicide and overdose. Researchers and service providers have made progress in addressing postpartum depression and anxiety, but barriers to care remain. Ali Rogin reports as part of our Race Matters coverage. #pbsnewshour #pbsnews #newshour #mother #maternalmortality #postpartumdepresssion #mentalhealthcare #MentalHealth #blackwomen #healthcare #pregnancy #motherhood #birth

I have had prepartum for a while now. Hormones play a big role in this. It's hard. But we got this.

The US didn’t include women in scientific studies until 1977! Didn’t include black women until 1993!!!

The issue is we get screened once. At delivery and that’s it. Only 1 or 2 post labor visits and not once did OB ask about mental health. There is no village or time for women to heal.

How about it’s psychotic to go back to work and separate from a new actual human baby after 6 or even 12 weeks

Yes- I am a therapist and specialize in perinatal period. Postpartum mood disorders are very common and yet- not everyone talks about them! This isn't baby blues- assessment/evaluations and access....

Trauma informed care integrated in residency for future obgyn doc to have would be so important as well as access and training for therapists to specialize in this space. PSI training is expensive!

The number is higher I feel like . Especially the ones that aren’t speaking up for help can’t account for them.

How is it evaluated “if” your agency follows steps but somehow it’s missed later down the line ?
