As the semiconductor industry pushes for smaller devices, transistors have shrunk to just a few nanometers. This means that the gate oxide, which acts as a barrier between the gate and the channel of the transistor, is so thin that electrons can actually tunnel through it! While the tunneling probability is quite low, with billions of transistors in modern CPUs, this leads to significant leakage current and increased power consumption.
