Ever wonder where you can get up close with some of nature’s coolest creatures without leaving Davis? 🦇🐝🦅🐞 Davis is packed with hidden wildlife experiences that feel like something out of a nature documentary. Whether you’re into bats, bugs, birds, or bees, there’s a spot here that’s perfect for exploring, learning, and just enjoying something a little different. The Yolo Basin Foundation bat flyout is truly a must-see. Thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from under the Causeway at sunset, creating a mesmerizing swirl across the sky. Local volunteers share insights on how bats navigate, hunt, and why they’re essential to the ecosystem. It’s an experience that’s equal parts science, wonder, and pure magic. The Bohart Museum of Entomology is an insect lover’s dream. With over seven million specimens from around the globe, including live displays, it’s easy to spend hours marveling at beetles, butterflies, and stick bugs. On the right day, you can even hold some live insects and learn directly from UC Davis entomologists. At the California Raptor Center, injured hawks, owls, falcons, and eagles get a second chance at life. Visitors can see these incredible birds up close, learn about the care and training involved in their recovery, and watch demonstrations that showcase their strength and agility.  The Bee Haven on campus is more than just a garden. Wander through a vibrant collection of native plants, watch bees and other pollinators at work, and learn how these tiny insects support local biodiversity and our food system. It’s calming, colorful, and educational. Davis makes it easy to connect with nature without spending a fortune. These experiences are just a few of the many opportunities available, and most are free or donation-based.  You can also explore campus science labs with public tours, attend hands-on workshops at the UC Davis Arboretum, check out public lectures and demonstrations on agriculture, sustainability, or wildlife, and visit local observatories and garden programs. There’s no shortage of ways to learn, explore, and have fun right in your own backyard.
