Carnivore Gonna Make Your Gut Microbiome Dip Out! If I had to design a diet to cause the WORST damage to your gut microbiome it would be the following: No fiber intake Low diversity of foods High saturated fat intake Carnivore has the trifecta! The research is very clear, the single BEST thing you can do for your gut microbiome is consuming a diverse array of fibrous containing foods, especially fermentable (soluble) fiber. Soluble fiber is the main fuel for the gut microbes & they ferment it to create short chain fatty acids like butyrate which have a MULTITUDE of beneficial effects such as improved insulin sensitivity, decreased inflammation, & increased fat oxidation (PMIDs: 29101261, 36505262, & 28856908). Intake of fiber has been shown to be beneficial to the gut microbiome & this is a clear consensus in the research literature (PMIDs: 34073366, 33113929, 30355393, & 38547246). Meanwhile high fat intake, particularly saturated fat, has been demonstrated to negatively impact the gut microbiome & reduce the abundance of beneficial bacteria species (PMIDs: 30655101, 30538180, & 40136712). This is likely due to the bile end products from fat digestion being somewhat toxic to the gut microbiota (PMID: 30538180) Now carnivore folks love to say “but I did carnivore & it healed my gut inflammation.” NO. What you had was likely a sensitivity to a specific source(s) of fiber & by doing carnivore, which is a form of an elimination diet, their symptoms improved & they didn’t even realize they were doing an elimination diet. But just because you aren’t getting a tummy ache from specific fiber sources does NOT mean you are healthier. Elimination diets exist to get your symptoms under control so that you can then ADD BACK sources of fiber one by one to see which ones you can tolerate vs. not. But no, a tummy ache is NOT the same thing as inflammation because dietary fiber CONSISTENTLY reduces inflammation So keep doing carnivore if you want, but you’re delusional if you think it’s good for your microbiome because it’s literally one of the WORST things you can do if you want healthy gut bacteria
