When we travel with Jack, packing is always a mission. He needs so many extra things just to feel safe and regulated, his iPad for communication, fidgets, special snacks, wipes, weighted blanket, changes of clothes… the list goes on. The first time we flew, I was stressing about how on earth we were going to fit everything into our standard baggage allowance. Then I discovered something I wish I’d known sooner: 👉 Most airlines give families like ours an extra free baggage allowance called a “medical box.” This isn’t just for wheelchairs or machines, it can include anything that’s medically or developmentally essential for your autistic child. For us, that means Jack’s sensory supports, comfort items, and even hygiene essentials. Here’s what to do: 1. Call your airline before you fly and ask about the “medical box” allowance. 2. Tell them what items your child needs and get written confirmation. 3. Pack all those vital extras without worrying about weight limits or excess baggage charges. Travel is hard enough when you have an autistic child. Knowing about this allowance has taken a huge weight off our shoulders, and it ensures Jack has what he needs to cope with the journey. If you’re travelling soon ask about it. It can make the whole experience so much smoother for you and your child. 💙 #A#AutismParentingT#TravelWithAutismA#AutismAwarenessA#AdditionalNeedsParentingautismfamily
