These aren’t used to find cables on a wall. It’s a VT4 and it’s used to make sure metallic work in a property hasn’t got voltage going through it i.e gas pipes and water pipes.

It’s detecting because you’re near the socket. Move up and you will loose it. Cannot be use for tracing.

as plenty of comments say it's an indicator not a tester, you need a 2 prong tester and proving unit as per regs (see 18th edition second revision electrical regs) handy, but don't trust them.

I spent £7 on one years ago. I lost it and missed it so much I bought a replacement. I won’t go near electric without testing it first.

I just look at the wall no sockets or switches no cable . Cables run plumb . Bit exiting having the odd bang
