President-elect Trump avoided punishment at his sentencing Friday in the New York hush money case that will make him the first convicted felon to occupy the Oval Office when he’s sworn in on Jan. 20. “Never before has this court been presented with such a unique and remarkable set of circumstances,” Judge Juan Merchan said at the 40-minute sentencing hearing. “This has been truly an extraordinary case.” Judge Merchan imposed an unconditional discharge, a rare alternative to jail time or probation, while noting the penalty for his conviction on 34 felony counts would have been stiffer if not for the protections afforded by the office of the presidency. “This court has determined that the only lawful sentence that permits entry of judgment of conviction without encroaching on the highest office of the land is an unconditional discharge,” the judge said before wishing Mr. Trump “godspeed” in his next term. Mr. Trump was convicted by a jury last May on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels in the waning days of the 2016 campaign. “This has been a very terrible experience,” Mr. Trump told the court as he appeared virtually during the hearing. “The fact is, I’m totally innocent.” Mr. Trump’s lawyers fought unsuccessfully to avoid the sentencing, with the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday night rejecting a last-minute bid to block it. The president-elect can appeal the verdict now that he’s been sentenced, but he cannot pardon himself since presidential pardon authority does not extend to state charges.
