I think it feels less intimidating for them to go in with an agreement that the relationship isn't that deep. They think they won't be hurt. But that's not how feelings work.

I’m poly, (obvious I know lol) but both my relationships we are very committed and close, but I do think in a lot of (like Reddit poly) think being enmeshed and committed is inherently wrong.

I work in family court, have sat through about 1,000 divorce and custody trials in a few years. Seen it end badly countless times, especially with the poor gd kids.
