I don't use base coat when doing gel and it doesn't peel off. I had to discover this on my own cuz where I learnt,it was a must to use base coat.

Without base coat it will stay, the first coat of ur color polish should be very light, but base coast has its own work to do on ur nails, it’s for protection, it protects ur nail plate.
