Hat n’ Boots Located in Seattle, Washington Built and opened in 1955 The idea was meant to bring folks into the new Frontier Village Shopping Center. The hat is 44ft in diameter and the boots are 22ft tall. If you were to proportionally wear these boots you would have to be roughly 300ft tall! It was built from structural steel, chicken wire, and plaster and cost $150k to build! Lewis Nasmyth designed the structures but couldn’t find anyone to build his Hat n’ Boots vision he did it himself alongside the owners of the center “stitch by stitch and wrinkle for wrinkle in structural steel.” The center was unsuccessful and then Hat n Boots functioned as a Texaco gas station: The hat as the office and the boots as the bathroom facilities! It was one of the most successful gas stations in the state. There are rumors of Elvis making a pit stop to fill up his pink caddy in 1962 during The World Fair. After interstate 5 was built sales dropped dramatically and the station closed in 1988 Over the years it was neglected and mistreated: it was a favorite skate spot to many local kids. While it sat vacant there were many efforts made to getting the buildings restored including a demolition protest march where everyone wore cowboy boots. It was a success- but they needed to be moved and were eventually in 2003 to Oxbow Park: hat first and boots second. They were then repaired in 2005. They still sit in Oxbow park where you can visit the structures! Plans are in the works to make the hat into a historical info center around the hat n boots story! Stay tuned for my Coffee Table book! More info soon!
