I work in environmental mgmt in water... don't drink from natural sources unless it's direct from a glacial source 😭 unfortunately industry and development means the vast majority of freshwater in nz is contaminated with ecoli, cryptosporidium, giardia... Just to name a few.

Fine to drink from Wilkies! done it heaps. Go check out Lake Rotakare Reserve too! you can camp there, but don’t drink that water 😅

If you're on the Maunga then yeah safe as, if you're further down the river past farms etc then would boil first

I'm a New Plymouth local. Mt Taranaki is a different beast in the winter and has claimed many tourists underestimating our micro climate and the speed condition can change is madness

if you ever head to the lower north island do a trip to kapiti island.went there recently for a hike all the wildlife birds and parrots arent scared. I had a Kākā on my shoulder half the hike
