not to nerd out but Wyverns are Wyverns, jabberwock would be a dragon given the 4 legs 2 wings, jaculus is kinda a Wyvern since it's got the two limbs two wings, and a tatzel is 4 leg no wings= Drake

Side note, the poem just says the jabberwock has "the jaws that bite, the claws that catch." No wings or scales are mentioned. Before the Burton film I assumed it was some sort of jungle cat.

Same with dinosaurs. They’re all wildly different but basically call any extinct large reptilian a dinosaur

Okay but who is the “we” that decides that mytho-ecological niches are what classifies these things? Because that is true for fish to a degree, but is nonsense for the description for a dragon.

"dragons are also lobsters" true. continually growing with age until they die not due to old age but crushed by the weight of their own body.

aren't 4 legged with wings called dragon? like i mean more specifically
I understand the rest of the statement but doesn't that mean the 4 legged 2 winged dinosaur be called something else?

Jordan Shifflett899 :
depends on context but in general a dragon is a large flying lizard with 4 legs and 2 wings. remove 2 legs you get a wyvern. remove 4 you get a Amphithere.

And then it's taken into a literal sense when with Japanese mythology when a fish can literally turn into a dragon.
