Nigeria's Access Bank, the largest retail bank in Africa by customers and the largest black-owned bank in the world, with over 68 million customers, has acquired Bidvest Bank of South Africa for R2.8 billion. Bidvest will utilize this amount to settle its debts. This purchase demonstrates that, unlike black South Africans, black Nigerians have been economically empowered by a black-owned economy, enabling them to establish the first genuinely black-owned bank in South Africa. Following SAA being overtaken by Ethiopian Airlines and ArcelorMittal being surpassed by Manhize in Zimbabwe, I will continue to assert that South Africa's dominant economic position is nearing its end as the Western capitalist system declines. This implies that South Africa must either align with the rest of Africa in decoupling from the West or risk becoming a laggard.
