I've been running a game since last year, and my nephew was a part of it, he was in two of my games but we had to merge them into one, and he chose to keep his Paladin over the druid, so he was getting so invested in a throw away character that had such a simple backstory, so much happened to this character in his quest of looking for his brother and getting memories back from a chaos Goddess, and last session his character was sent into the past, a week before his brother disappeared, and was given a choice of staying home(like his character originally did) or going with his brother. He chose to go which on essence changed the timeline, so his character effectively had an ending to his story. And this was supposed to be a funny session🤣🤣🤣🤣 but yeah time travel is great. So now he's making a new character

I'm so invested as and love the character I play that I cried when he died but my dm had other plans for my character and it was detrimental that I almost killed my party members but it's all good now
