If an imported product becomes too expensive, the local consumer will simply stop buying it and buy a product manufactured inside the US instead. Simple product substitution effect.

no the importers pay the tariff , so you as an American manufacturer you will pay, that means your customers will have to cover that tariff , products will be more expensive because of that
