If your child is anxious about going back to school then it’s really important to think carefully about your language and the hidden messages your words might be sending. Be very careful about using negatives like ‘you don’t have to worry’ or ‘there’s nothing to be anxious about.’ The negative usually gets lost and the child just hears the words worry and anxious. If we try to reassure them that the day won’t last too long and we will be there for them soon then it implies that the day is to be endured and only we can rescue them. On the other hand, it may help your child to know you are thinking of them, not because you are worried about them but because you are wondering what they will be doing and are looking forward to hearing all about it. Knowing you will be excited to see them at the end of the day is very different to believing you will be relieved to see them. Anxiety is all about feeling unsafe and so the more we can help our children to feel safe at school the more we can help reduce their anxiety about going there - it is less about their anxiety of leaving us and more about needing to feel safe at school. Every child is different, of course, and there will be ups and downs in school life - we need to help them feel they can manage even when things don’t go so well at school, which is a long term project! How we prepare them for that first school drop off is a good place to start! You may also have to look at your own anxiety about leaving them at the school gate, or you own feelings of anxiety about school when you were a child. These are valid feelings, and it is not about pretending they are not there, but nor do we want them to transfer onto our child and colour their experience of school. If you didn’t enjoy school yourself, you may have to learn to talk about it very differently to your child if you want them to have a chance to experience it differently. Very best wishes for the start back to a new school year, hoping you and your child can thrive and flourish in this exciting chapter in your lives 😊🙏❤️ #newterm #school #anxiety #schoolanxiety #parenting
