Maybe Xaden and Vi are actual mates (one of the few humans to mate) like Tairn mentioned several times and they had to sever the bond as well (which is why Tairn is sleeping too)

I think it’s both too. I feel like it’s very TVD when they turn off their emotions so they don’t have to feel how bad it hurts. But also she knows it’s the only way to keep him safe.
