@guardian: Protesters gathered at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin singing an anti-fascist song as thousands took to the streets across Germany over the weekend to demonstrate against the rise of the far-right in the country and beyond. The protests came as the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) launched its election campaign in Halle in eastern Germany on Saturday. The AfD is in second place in the polls ahead of the national elections next month. “Being on the street again with thousands of people gave me some hope I had lost in the last couple of weeks after the rise of oligarchs around the world,” said Theresia, who filmed the video. The 22-year-old activist previously attended protests in January 2024 which were sparked by a media report by the investigative outlet Correctiv revealing that AfD MPs had been meeting neo-Nazi activists in secret to discuss a “masterplan” for mass deportations to be carried out in the event of their coming to power. Elon Musk also made a surprise appearance during the AfD campaign event in Halle, speaking publicly in support of the party for the second time in as many weeks. “There is too much focus on past guilt, and we need to move beyond that”, Musk said via a live videolink to a hall of 4,500 people, apparently referring to Germany’s Nazi past.
