This magnificent painting shows Frederick Howard, the 5th Earl of Carlisle, now hanging at the family seat of Castle Howard in Yorkshire. But the star of this painting is this little dog, named Rover, who was famous for his adventurous spirit. Rover accompanied his master on his Grand Tour around Italy in the 1760s, and many of Frederick’s letters mention the dog’s rather blasé approach to dangerous situations. “Rover is very well” Frederick wrote as they visited a waterfall in Italy, “and frequently frightened me by standing upon the brink of a precipice to look at the torrent below, the roaring of which he did not in the least comprehend.” But Rover met his fair share of danger, too. “I have been in great grief and distress, but am now very easy, about poor Rover” Frederick wrote in April, “he broke the small bone of his leg by… his running under the hind wheel to avoid a great dog that wanted to bite him. It was set immediately, and I have left the only Italian servant I have to nurse him.” But it would all end in tragedy, in Paris. The Earl wrote in his diary of “end of poor Rover, who was run over… and expired immediately”.
