At a catered event, I wouldn't expect to pay. At a restaurant, ofc you pay for your meal, and the bday person gets there's covered.

I’ve never gone to a restaurant for someone’s bday with the expectation the birthday person pays. If I’m hosting at my place, I got it. But a restaurant? I’ve never had that expectation or experience.

There's no rules I expect to cover my meal & a portion of the birthday person's meal. But when I invite people to a birthday dinnet often (not always) pay for everyone/most of the bill.

Exactly. If I’m the host, I’m paying for my guests as they’ve taken time to come celebrate me and give gifts. However, even if I was a guest, I’m still bringing money with me in case this happens
