Sustainable Seed Sowing with a Soil Blocker! 🌱 I am always looking for ways to garden more sustainably and reduce plastic, so for seed sowing, soil blocking is a great option. I’ve been trying out blockers from ….. and I’ve been really enjoying the process. To get started, you first need to water your growing media, so is will maintain its shape, I’m using the smallest blocker and a bamboo tray and I just push the blocker firmly into the growing media filling up each of the chambers. I’m then using a wooden base tray made from an old pallet and I just push down on the blocker leaving perfect little blocks to sow my seeds into. These small blocks are just for starting small seeds like these asparagus kale and I would pop in 1 seed per block and then leave them to germinate, you could even reuse things like plastic fruit trays to hold your blocks too. Then there’s the larger blocker, with inserts the same size as the small block, again this is firmly pressed into the growing media and popped out into the tray. Your small blocks can then fit perfectly inside the larger ones, just as if you were potting them up. Or, you can use the larger blocks for sowing larger seeds like these courgettes.. I just sow the seeds into them directly, add a little compost on top, and just plant out when ready. This isn’t an ad, but I have been trying out blockers from ….. and I’ve been really enjoying both them and the process. Some other alternatives to flimsy plastic trays are these long life, recycled trays that could last you a life time if looked after. Fiber pots, however they do disintegrate quite quickly, coir pots which are a bit better and my favourite vi pots which can last a number of years before biodegrading. So what are your thoughts on soil blocking? Do you feel like it’s an option you’d try out? 😊🌱 #sustainableliving #sowingseeds #gardeningtips #organicgardening #sustainablegarden #growyourownfood
