5 ways I’m preparing for early motherhood. 1. 🧸 Identifying and communicating my boundaries Learning to take care of a newborn and establishing breastfeeding on little sleep - all whilst recovering from birth - is a lot. I have shared my worries, expectations and boundaries with my husband so he knows what I am comfortable with and when he may need to step in. For example, I know I’m not going to want many visitors at the beginning. I get that everyone will be excited to meet the baby, but let’s not forget that the mother has just gone through a life-changing event and physically, mentally and emotionally needs time to recover and adapt, so in the first few days/weeks visitors should be there to support the mum, not just wanting to meet and hold the baby. My husband will be ‘gatekeeper’ of the house during this time keeping visitors to a minimum and looking out for my needs. I’ve also been thinking about rules in general for visitors when they around the newborn - no kissing, washing hands before holding her, etc. 2. 🧸 Assembling my trustworthy troops These are the people I will be able to call on through all times of the day and night and who I’m comfortable with them seeing me at my not-so-best (ie wearing a maternity nappy, leaking b👀bs, tired, grumpy and emotional). I feel more at ease knowing I have a handful of trusted people I can lean on when I’m feeling exhausted or overwhelmed. 3. 🧸 Researching professional support services before I need them Baby not latching? Pain when nursing? No dirty nappies? What’s going on?! Researching and creating a list of providers ready to call on is one less thing you need to worry about in those worrying times. 4. 🧸 Learning to be kinder to myself When it comes to making time for self care and relaxation, I’m not great at listening to my body. In fact, my nearest and dearest know I have a tendency to push myself even when my body is screaming for me to take a break. Pregnancy has been good practise for giving myself some grace and taking things a little slower, because I have another little human inside me who I need to take care of too. Being kind to myself and not trying to do ‘all the things’ is going to be crucial to my recovery in the first few months postpartum. Speaking of learning, my final point is: 5. 🧸 Educating myself Feeding, wake windows, sleep hygiene, physical recovery; there’s a lot to learn. And while well-meaning people may try to offer their opinions and advice, it can often feel overwhelming. I’m not going to get everything right, especially as a first time mum. And that’s ok! Baby and I will learn as we go. But gaining knowledge from real experts on the immediate postpartum period and the newborn stage has helped me feel prepared for all different scenarios and ultimately calmed my nerves for the arrival of bub. I know the signs to look out for if baby or I need some extra support, and where to get it. #motherhood #firsttimemum #mummatobe #foryoupage #fyp #fypシ
