You can see the chance of having it in bloodlines. HYPP has an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance, meaning that only one copy of the mutation is needed to produce the disease and display symptoms (NH). An NN horse is double NEGATIVE- free of the disease. HH is double positive and cannot be registered with AQHA(some countries don’t allow HH horses to be imported). -Common symptoms of HYPP include muscle tremors, weakness, muscle cramping, depression, paralysis, sweating, prolapse of the third eyelid, noisy breathing and/or abnormal sounds. -There are many ways to try to be proactive or keep your horse comfortable. Karo syrup, banamine, xylazine, or acetazolamides, but of course, talk to a vet first. Learning if your horse has a particular trigger (my guy- only a drop in barometric pressure) can also help.
