In your age example, you talk about bonds. Does that mean pulling funds out of Schwab account from the various funds and going to treasury.gov to buy actual bonds there? Can you be more specific?

fidelity has great ETFs and mutual funds just look for low expense ratio which it will charge you less % for the money balance you have. FXAIX to start but you can find more conservatives.
