@itsbreabird: When Frodo Baggins volunteers to take the One Ring and leave his homeland of the Shire, he never returns. Or I should say, he never returns as the same Hobbit he was before his quest. He is forever changed by wounds “that cannot be wholly cured.” Though he is able to save the Shire as he set out to do, it was not saved for him. Perhaps the vision in Tom Bombadil’s house all that time ago was given as a gift to Frodo to prepare his heart for leaving Middle-earth; that though he would give everything in sacrifice too rid the world of a great evil, he would eventually come be welcomed in paradise to spend his days—however short or long—in a place of safety and peace. This ending for Frodo can be confusing. Where are ‘The Undying Lands’? Is him going there the equivalent of Frodo going to ‘heaven’? Was Frodo’s stepping aboard that boat akin to him choosing to die? Believe it or not, I’ve gotten all of these questions and more regarding Frodo’s choice to leave Middle-earth forever. And today, I’d like to do a deep-dive on what J.R.R. Tolkien told us regarding the ultimate fate of this beloved character. || Read full post, “Under a Swift Sunrise” over on my substack. #frodo #frodobaggins #lordoftherings #tolkien #tolkientok #jrrtolkien #lordoftheringstok
