One would think a good direct file program would lead to a smaller, more efficient IRS. But I guess it makes whatever billionaire owns Intuit poorer so...can't have that can we?

I use direct file because it is almost free if you are under a certain income. Tax preparers are very expensive. I guess I will not be filing and paying my $8 that I owe...

People just won’t file and either the government will hold on to their money or taxpayers won’t ever pay. Then there won’t be anyone at the IRS to audit returns because of the hiring freeze etc. 🤣

Cut off the $$…I’m self employed, but if I wasn’t I’d be calling my HR and changing tax status to exempt. Set that $ aside yourself cause you’ll eventually need to pay.

I got a sick feeling. Could the reason why EM wants access to SS is to impose an automatic 30% tax on payments, then recipients would have to file, making those companies more money?

It’s a shame that you have to pay a corporation to pay your taxes. I didn’t even know about the direct file option until last year and was planning on using it this year.

The legit big companies don’t care. The people who can free file bog down the rest of the machine. Avoid turbo tax and H&R Block. They probably want to off shore the work anyway. Don’t sign a 7216.

I did direct file for the first time this year after using turbo tax for the last 15 years. It was free and so much faster. I’ve already received my federal return direct deposited to my bank.

There are programs where accountants volunteer their time to do people’s taxes for free. Check into programs near you. I did it while I was in my last semester of getting my masters in taxation

I buy the program for filing my taxes because I have a slightly more complex tax filing than basic; I always share the other 4 filing with “friends” for free-99 🤣. You can file 5x on that software 😉

This may not be as bad as it sounds, if I recall correctly, at least some of the tax preparation software vendors must have a free version, as long as it does at least which Direct file does…

I used Chime this year, instead of turbo again, who wanted $25 just to use my refund as payment. Bit skeptical, but both fed and state were $0, and there were no other fees at all.

My power company prepares the bills I pay. The restaurant I order takeout from gives me bills that THEY prepare. My tax bill from France, where I also pay taxes, is prepared by them. Why is this bad?

22 and broke &had to take care of my then hubby's taxes from a year he didnt file I looked up the tax code myself and went through the form line by line.Anyone w/ a 10th grade educ. could do it.
