Was hanging out with some friends when much to my surprise we found a couple of #DeadMansFoot or #Pisolithus in the yard. Given how dry it is across much of California, I wasn’t expecting to see anything growing this time of year, but lo and behold there were these brown lumps pushing up from the hard packed dirt. Also known as #DyeBalls or #DogTurdFungus, this is a mycorrhizal gasteroid mushroom (spores on the inside) in the Boletales order. These mushrooms can exert tremendous force (80 lbs/square inch) as they rise up from the soil, making them very effective at mixing and aerating soils - making them a common component in garden soil mixtures. They start out as dense lumps with individual peridioles inside that mature in a gradient towards the top, going from black to yellow, to brown as it turns into a massive pile of brown powdery spores. . I have never tried eating these before but I have heard that people around the world enjoy these. My friend was motivated to try this so I my theory to the test and fried some up, the flavor was mild and pleasant and the texture was very meaty, almost like sausage. Would definitely try this again if I find another super dense specimen like this. Note of caution, to prepare this I cut off the out layer (peridium) and cooked it for >10m over medium high heat and only ate a few small pieces. Everyone who ate it enjoyed it and felt fine afterwards, but as with trying any mushroom there’s always potential for some mild GI upset. . . . #pisolithusarhizus #gasteroid #mycology
