Back in ye olden days of OG DND, construction of a keep and it’s maintenance was required and you had to hire and pay staff, you literally had to keep registers and balance sheets, payroll, etc…

My longest running game was 2.5 years and our ledger was actually handled by an accountant who played with us. I as the dm often had to reference it to make sure the look stayed interesting. 😅

Our group had this very quickly. We found treasure at lvl 3, then the DM let us bet on a gladiator match when he had no idea of how odds work (neither did we). He gave 12:1 odds for our gladiator.
