There’s a new YouTube video live today, all about miniature pots. Small vessels, jars, bowls and vases made to sit alongside larger pieces or to top the towers of pots I often build. In the video, I take you through the full process of shaping, glazing and firing these forms, and explore what makes working at this scale so particular. You can find the narrated film through the link in my profile’s biography. At first, I thought of them as novelties, the kind of work made for doll’s houses, yet after creating this series I’ve grown rather fond of them. They’re satisfying to hold, easy to covet, and pair beautifully with larger forms. I don’t often make vessels this small, yet they’ve become valuable additions to arrangements and groupings. Creating a pot this size is far from simple. It’s easy to let shapes round out and thicken when scaling them down, but retaining crispness and refinement is where the challenge lies. Thin walls can distort or collapse with the slightest pressure, and trimming them requires a steady hand and sharp tools as if you trim with dull blades you need to apply more pressure than you’d think, buckling the delicate pots walls. In short, creating these was much more of a challenge than I anticipated. I hope you enjoy watching the process and seeing how these miniature forms come together. Let me know which of the small pieces you’d choose if you could hold them in your hands. #pottery #miniaturepottery #craft #ceramics #oddlysatisfying
