once you remove the hard shell and spit it out, the you chew the tip to spread the little threads apart, so it becomes a hard brush intially, then eventually becomes softer and loses falvor.

This is called Miswak (tooth stick), it is more like a natural toothbrush, our Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) advice us to use it as it cleans and purifies the mouth.
