If they left the Altimeter setting @ 29.92 and not what the AWOS said, that could count for some altitude discrepancy.

This stepping on each other communication btw Pilot and ATC in aviation is not new. That’s why you have to confirm communication. The radio makes a weird noise when this happens

One pilot said they at 300ft. The other pilot said they at 400ft. They weren’t supposed to be flying above 200ft!
