Kids don't like you any less when you say no - especially if you're there to help them with the disappointment.
You probably know some parents who never say no. What's that relationship like?

“I want” vs “what would they want our relationship to be now and in the future” is something to think about. It’s the hardest thing to gauge as a parent but I remind myself, it’s not about what I want

Do both mate. Be what they need at that time.

they will appreciate you saying no when they are older. tough for parents at times but they genuinely know you were right later.

Parent them until they're 21, then you can be their mate. In saying that I'm 44, if either of them tell me to do something, I do it. And I still ask my Dad if I can leave the table at their house. 🤣

Also, don’t say ‘no’ just because you think that’s what society thinks is the right thing. Have your own boundaries, my kids can eat their tea in their beds if they want, we don’t have arbitrary rules

Did you have kids to have friends? No? Then don’t be their friend

I've told my kid that when she's an adult, if she doesn't hate me, we can be friends. At this point I'm her parent with the goal of raising a decent human. I do explain my perspective of things.
