The above photographs are of Ibiwe Junction, Oba market’s axis of Ring Road, Benin City. Photo: Professor Barbara Winston Blackmun Date: 1974 Location: Benin City Take a moment to soak in these rare photographs snapped right at the bustling Ibiwe Junction, in the heart of Benin City’s iconic Ring Road 51 years ago. Captured through the lens of renowned American art historian, Prof. Barbara Winston Blackmun, these images freeze a vibrant moment in time, during the military administration of Brigadier General Samuel Ogbemudia, when the Oba Market Office Complex was still under construction. Peep the timeless markers of the era: The iconic green and yellow Daihatsu taxis, Baby-blue Volkswagen Beetles on the dusty roadside and that unforgettable tree many old folks who grew up in the ancient city remember. These photos don’t just capture a city, they pulse with memory, motion, and meaning. Look closely and you’ll feel the nostalgia seeping through every frame. Now, 51 years later, it’s almost impossible to take this same shot without colliding into an entirely different city. Barbara Blackmun, the woman behind the lens, wasn’t just a visitor. She was a scholar of Benin artifacts, especially the Ivory works. Her work immortalized the spirit of Benin’s past. These photographs are part of that legacy.
