IIRC In the books I think I remember the Frodo talking to Tom Bombadil and being like hey why don’t you take the ring and Tom Bombadil was basically like “yeah I could but I don’t really want to 💅🏻”

the real explanation for Tom: he was the first story Tolkien told his kids. and so when he was making Arda, of course Tom was already there, and always would be. in Arda, he is First.

Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Sam hesitate because he felt bad Frodo had to bare the burden alone once again, or Frodo was being so possessive it scared him and he pulled back. I haven’t read the book in a while

my personal head cannon is that Tom B. is the name of some inspirational person Tolkien met when he was a child that he wanted to pay homage to. it was Tolkiens inside joke just for him
