In February 2014, five Finnish cave divers set out to complete a challenging traverse beneath Norway's Pluradalen. They planned to drive through narrow, flooded passages at depths exceeding 130m to emerge in the Steinuglefläget dry cave, a route only discovered the previous year. The dive required extensive equipment, DPVs, and lengthy decompression stops-and all divers were highly experienced. Grönkvist and Huotarinen made the initial push into the cave. During ascent from the deep section, Huotarinen became stuck in a tight passage around 110m deep, entangled in the guideline. When Grönkvist returned, Huotarinen had inhaled water, panicked, and ceased moving. Meanwhile, the second team-Rantanen, Uusimäki, and Kankanen-set off two hours later, hoping to rendezvous beyond the same passage. Uusimäki reached the scene of the first passing but panicked at the sight of Huotarinen's body and passed as well; he was unable to continue and did not make it to the exit. The remaining three-Grönkvist, Rantanen, and Kankanen -all surfaced but were subsequently hospitalized for decompression sickness; Rantanen sustained serious spinal complications. Norwegian authorities soon deemed the cave too hazardous for an official recovery and banned further diving. They brought in elite British cave rescuers-including Rick Stanton, John Volanthen, and Jason Mallinson-to assess the situation. After initial exploration dives, the operation was aborted for safety reasons and the ban remained in place. Refusing to abandon their friends, Finnish teammates covertly returned to Plura later in March 2014 and successfully recovered both bodies in a meticulously planned-and unauthorized -expedition.
