@buddha_bugs: Mature male Theraphosa apophysis (pink-footed goliath bird-eating tarantula) showing off his beautiful iridescent purple/pink colors! We keep multiple females of all three Theraphosa species and I have to say this one is without a doubt the best, the females look great and as you can see the mature males are very impressive as well! Here’s a quick primer on some other Ascomycete indicators for Morels (Morchella). From left to right I have a true morel (Morchella species), an Elfin Saddle (Helvella species), and a Purple Crown Cup (Sarcosphera coronaria). The morel mushroom is a delicious and highly prized edible, but they have be tricky to find. It helps to learn what conditions and habitats they fruit in. Here in the mountains of California, it pays to look out for associated Ascomycete mushrooms that show up at the same time since these can be indicative of where morels will also grow. Most likely this is Helvella vespertina since we were around conifer trees, it can be made edible if you boil it once before cooking to blow off the toxic gyromitrin/MMH. The purple crown cup is a great indicator species for morels but is toxic and accumulates heavy metals, do not eat it. .
