When faced with the reality of what you set out to do, it’s like, ‘Be careful what you wish for.’” —Nick Russell Papsura’s exact elevation is hard to pin down—it’s somewhere between 21,120 and 21,252 feet depending on whom you ask—but the 2,500-foot couloir splitting the mountain’s west face is so stunning that when Hilaree Nelson first saw it from a helicopter in 1999, she was immediately hooked. It took nearly 20 years and multiple attempts, but in 2017 she finally made the first ski descent from the summit, along with Jim Morrison and Chris Figenshau.
