You could try to let the trimmer run while it lays somewhere nearby but not in your hand. Then pet him and give him treats so he gets used just to the noise.

our girl was fine with the clippers, the boy took a while. what sped it up for us was giving him a licky treat while the clippers were on and gradually moving them closer to him
