In this scene, Roy Cohn is ill and his health is deteriorating due to the AIDS virus. This is his birthday, and Trump has just gifted him cufflinks coated in diamonds and adorned in a Tiffany’s box, there’s just one thing - the cufflinks are fake. Ivanna, adjacent to Roy, had examined them and found them to be a cheap knock off made of pewter and zirconia, her face beckons with guilt and shame because she has just confessed her realisation that the cufflinks are fake. Roy stands up to compliment Trump, controlling himself just enough to not let anything slip from his true conscious, because Roy knows he has fostered this monster. After his effort to stay composed, Trump brings out his birthday cake, the American flag echoing Roy Cohns position in the US government, his loyalties (very questionable loyalties) and his future cemented in history. Roy’s desolation is because instead of normal candles that Roy would have received everyday of his life since he was a boy, have been replaced by Sparklers, you can’t blow out sparklers. Trump was afraid his mentors illness would spread to him, a myth and a testament to the fact that Trumps self preservation dictates his decisions that even his allies were not safe from the shame he had to inflict of them, and he has no room for compassion even to the people who made him.
