Irish curls. I have the same exact thing and the older I get the straighter the top layer gets. Also hard water is terrible for my hair and we have hard water

It’s also because usually top layers of our hair are more damaged and over processed with heat etc which tames the curls vs the underneath which is healthier

Mine was the same. Completely stopped straightening it for a few years and more layers, now all of it is curly

Layer the top layer more, maybe? I find that the more layers I have, the less weight weighing down my hair and my hair will naturally curl/wave with little effort on my end.

Have you tried any of the curly hair routines? Might get a good cleanser cuz hard water is the devil, and then try a few different ones… might be able to convince the top to cooperate 🤣
