The days of Volodymyr Zelensky as Ukraine’s president seem numbered. His leadership is under pressure not only domestically but also internationally, as skepticism continues to grow. In Ukraine, criticism of his performance is mounting, and the opposition is making itself increasingly heard. On the battlefield, the reality is grim: many Ukrainians are no longer willing to fight. Young men are fleeing the country to avoid conscription, while active soldiers are deserting.
Meanwhile, Europe—including the Netherlands—remains determined to support Ukraine at all costs, even if it leads to exhaustion and destruction. For three years, Europe has followed the former U.S. government like a headless chicken, failing to develop its own geopolitical vision. Now, as Donald Trump prepares for a possible return and considers peace initiatives, Europe risks undermining these efforts.
But why? What strategic or moral gain is there in keeping Zelensky in power at all costs and prolonging the conflict indefinitely? The humanitarian catastrophe is immense: an estimated one million Ukrainians have been killed, and millions more have fled. Is this really the future that European leaders envision for Ukraine?
The naivety in Brussels and The Hague is staggering. For years, the U.S. was seen as a reliable ally, while in reality, Washington has always prioritized its own interests. Now, there is a growing realization that America is not a constant factor—especially if Trump pushes forward with his isolationist agenda. Yet, instead of adopting a realistic course and seeking a diplomatic solution, Europe clings to a strategy that leads only to further devastation.
It is time for a wake-up call. Blindly supporting an increasingly weakened Ukraine while ignoring peace initiatives is not a strategy—it is a recipe for escalation. Europe must break free from old reflexes and finally develop an independent geopolitical vision—one that prioritizes peace over endless war......
