King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem, born in 1161 as the son of King Amalric I, is remembered in history as the “Leper King,” a tragic yet heroic figure of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem. From childhood, he suffered from leprosy, a disease that worsened as he grew older, but his sharp mind and courage were never diminished. Educated under the guidance of William of Tyre, Baldwin was intelligent, politically aware, and surprisingly strong-willed. At the age of just thirteen, in 1174, he ascended the throne after his father’s death, inheriting a fragile kingdom surrounded by enemies. Despite his youth and illness, Baldwin quickly showed himself to be a capable leader, both politically and militarily. His most famous achievement came in 1177 at the Battle of Montgisard, when he led a vastly outnumbered Crusader army to a stunning victory against Saladin, one of the greatest Muslim commanders of the age. Though physically weakened—eventually becoming blind and paralyzed in his hands and feet—he insisted on leading his troops, often being carried into battle on a litter to inspire his soldiers. His reign was also marked by careful diplomacy and attempts to secure the kingdom’s survival by arranging strategic marriages, as he himself could not produce an heir due to his illness. Baldwin IV’s strength of character, piety, and determination won him respect both among his people and even from his enemies. He died young, in 1185, at just twenty-four years old, leaving the throne to his young nephew, but his death plunged the kingdom into instability. Within only two years, Saladin crushed the Crusaders at the Battle of Hattin and captured Jerusalem. Baldwin IV remains a symbol of courage and resilience in the face of suffering, a king who, despite leprosy, defended his kingdom with brilliance and dignity, and whose story has been immortalized in chronicles and even in modern films like Kingdom of Heaven.
