Jesus references it in Matthew, Maccabees had large groups doing it, Mordecai ashed and publically wailed. repentance should be daily and ash reminds and encourages us.

That’s like saying you shouldn’t follow the 10 commandments cuz they are from the Old Testament. Also the Bible is a combination of old and New Testament.

Prayer & literal repentance was also an acceptable sacrifice for sin in the Torah. A good study of how the law operated will open your eyes to how little were taught correctly about it.
