Why can't babies have honey? Most parents have heard that honey should be avoided in infants under 1 year, but don’t know why. In rare circumstances, honey can be contaminated with Botulism spores. When the spores are swallowed, they activate and can produce toxin within the intestinal tract (this is a little different from food borne botulism which is usually caused by swallowing the toxin directly). The infant gut seems to be particularly vulnerable to botulism spore germination/toxin production. Toxin exposure blocks nerve signals to muscles and leads to loss of muscle tone and sometimes paralysis. In small doses injected into facial muscles, toxin diminishes wrinkles. But in an infant, botulism exposure can lead to paralysis of important muscles responsible for swallowing and breathing, which is potentially fatal. Now, truthfully, these situations are VERY RARE. And in many cases, the source of the botulism spores is not known — some data indicates that many cases of infantile botulism spore exposure were a result of swallowing microsocopic dirt particles. But honey CAN contain the spores as well. It is easy to argue that because these situations are so rare, the need to be careful is lower. But I disagree with this type of risk assessment. When the consequences have the potential to be truly devastating, why take the chance? WHAT ABOUT COOKED HONEY? Botulism spores are heat resistant (botulism toxin is not, but as explained above, the spores are the problem when it comes to infantile botulism). Unfortunately, what this means is that cooked honey is not necessarily safer. We recommend avoiding cooked or even commercially prepared foods containing honey. WHAT HAPPENS ON THE 1ST BIRTHDAY? There’s no magical “switch” on the first birthday that enables an infant’s gut to suddenly know how to handle botulism spores. The natural defenses in the intestines develop gradually between 6- 12 months, so in some ways, the age limit is a little bit arbitrary. But as a general rule, most infants exposed to the spores after a year will do okay, whereas those exposed earlier are at higher risk for a bad outcome. #blw #babyledweaningmealideas #babyledweaning #firstfood #honey #parent #mom
