@dnd.university: Why would I choose charisma when I can’t talk good irl? https://www.youtube.com/@DnDUni #dnd #dungeonsanddragonsmemes #dungeonsanddragons #d&d #dndcharacter #dndmemes #dndhomebrew #bard
THIS! I'm playing a character with the second highest charisma in the party behind the rogue but I'm not a charismatic person 😭

grinch1380 :
why do people think that charisma checks are mind control? "i rolled a 25 on persuasion so now i get to make npcs do anything"

at our table words have more power than dice when it comes to charisma checks

talk first then roll, opportunity for advantage or disadvantage

that's like forcing your players to go to the gym for strength checks.

I play a charisma character because I don't like being social & need to be more social. I'll try to give the rousing speech but I'm not Sam or Talisan. Let the dice help please!

I would have said: shop keep notices you seem very nervous interacting with other people and so he takes pity on you and sets his best wares on the table and tells you that you can get one item 1/2 of

i have it where they talk first and that influences the dc

lolster626 :
ask your players what they say because it gets them into role-playing but don't let what they say affect what happens

Donavan H :
You roleppay you get advantage but I'll never make someone act out skill checks. but hey you lockpick irl I 100% give you advantage in game lol

as long as it goes both ways this is fine, if I roll a 4 but give the most convincing story/explanation etc it should count if this is going to happen

That One Guy :
I usually make them talk before rolling and depending on how well they talk they may get a +/- to their role. If we are role playing you have to try, because you're making me engage as the NPC

Skylark :
I love playing charismatic characters, but sometimes I'll just not be feeling it and I'll just say "I'm not really up for role-playing this, can we just do it mechanically?" and my table understands.

1: 50% is outrageous, and discounts to strangers is weird regardless of Charisma
2: What the players say influence DC, however, refer to 1
3: Refer to 1

"with a roll of 34 the shopkeep is just mesmerized by your face as you speak. he agree's only half listening. your pretty privilege pays off here."

Joe Dugan :
I always ask if they wanna say anything specific before the roll, then with dice results they can adjust their tone to match the roll, or have the NPC react based on the roll

I love roleplaying NPC’s affected by high stats.. if your charisma is too high people with 5+ less than yours start having difficulty denying you 😂 it can become detrimental

craKed_Wolf :
i mean you either use the roll or you make them act out the scene, either the roll dictates the outcome or the things said, doing both most of the time invalidates one of the two

I get why it might be frustrating. But I find it more frustrating and boring if every interaction is just a dice roll.

I like to have my players RP the interaction first. Then I may award advantage of disadvantage depending on how they do :p (or flat roll if it feels right)

Gilead_Arisen :
This is where I would make them speak first and then give advantage or disadvantage based on their actual words.

I 100% agree that for ridiculous asks you should be asked to role-play… But consideration has to be given based on the number that is rolled… Remember that a 30 ability is God tier…

RP should be a positive modifier to conversations, but never a negative modifer

I will allways ask you to say something, but if your character is charismatic I won't hold it against them if your not.

Arcane Affinity| DND Items :
usually if the player produces a good argument I will give them advantage, they don't necessarily have to role play out the conversation. but I base the DC on how likely the argument is to work
