This is so true, most modern horrors focus more on violence than the things that are actually scary.

The Haunting of Hill House - Nell is unreliable, we experience everything through her POV. Robert Wise threw the book across the room when he was startled while reading it 🍀

couldn't agree more! blood is cool, i appreciate good sfx, but its not really scary. disfigured people and monsters and screamers do work, but on a surface level. they make me feel the extremes of unease and shock but its just unpleasant. i want to seat at the narrowest edge of my seat forgetting for how long i'd been clutching my fists because of tension. not jumping 20 feet high at random points in a film/game.
speaking of fear of being watched — the "magnus archives" narrative podcast is a fun exanple. there are other fears there but this one is the core of the plot, slowly unravelling through the episodes

A very scary movie is about some annoying kids going into the basement - The Blair Witch Project 🤣

some of Stephen King's short stories are simply terrifying in the images we make in our own minds...love that

To be fair, I always felt like the tension, the looming presence of the - threat- of violence (or unknown threat) is the power of horror. To deliver on the threat is to move on from horror to shock.

i actually wrote a book that uses these principles!!! It’s called After Dark and is available on Amazon! Basically a group of friends discover that the murders and disappearances in their town are the work of a vampire. Think Stranger Things meets Dracula.

as a dm for dnd i tend to use vents and tight places where players have only 2 options, noises and perception checks, one of my favorite is a lone player cralling in a vent alone due to being the 1/2
