I mean developmentally, allowing the discomfort of boredom is a big part of kids developing creativity and other skills but I am not going to force it at a restaurant table and ruin everyone's night.

it is important for kids to be bored! but there's a time and place to practice those skills and in public at a restaurant is not it

Boredom is okay in a safe space where finding creative ways to alleviate that boredom is appropriate. For a 2 year old this is a supervised, private, & childproof space. A dinner table is a place to

So I think boredom is a tool to teach young kids because they have to go to school someday. And boredom is a part of life, we have to be safe in car, sometimes you have to get medical procedures done

It's not about them being forced to be bored. It's about them being content without actively being entertained. Then they get to absorb the environment, learn about people surrounding them.

They don't... they need to be engaged because being engaged = learning. This is absurd. A bored mind is an anxious mind. it's bad for their development to be regularly and unnecessarily bored.

The church bathroom was the place we all got spanked in for not sitting still and they wonder why we rejected that nonesense

Yes. 👏🏽 I was forced into such terribly uncomfortable and sometimes painful experiences for the comfort of adults with zero choice. Children should be able to be comfortable.

I think boredom makes kids get creative if given actives to choose from. That being said a restaurant or public space that isn’t child friendly isn’t the place for this. 1/2

I think in this case the word boredom is being misused. It is important that children have periods of time where they are not being actively engaged so they can explore and create in their environment

Boredom fosters creativity and ingenuity. Which are two things I do *not* want my young child leaning heavily in to if I’ve brought them to a place where there’s an expected level of decorum.

Being bored is should not be used in public. In public, parents need to be engaged to help teach them how to function in public. Sometimes, that means providing a tool like a phone to regulate.

I mean, the reason kids need to be bored (from what I understand) is so they can learn to entertain themselves. It just means that you don’t need to be their constant source of entertainment. Buuuuut

It spurs creativity, makes them figure out something to do - but they can be bored at home and build forts or whatever - not in a public place they’re dragged to.

As an adult having to reteach myself how to handle boredom, I kinda agree. The Mobile Dopamine Box really messed me up. Being bored isn't just inconvenient, it's PAINFUL.

Productive boredom can be great, boredom due to demands for compliance is a recipe for disaster.

I agree, if I force them to be there I should accommodate them. but i also agree with comment for when we're at home or in kids spaces, at least for kids who are a bit older (not babies/toddlers)
